Title: Software or hardware encryption?
Post by: ramki on March 17, 2010, 07:57:37 am
Which is better? Software (Pointsec, Truecrypt, Bitlocker) or hardware (Seagate) encryption?

Depends on what you want to achieve. Protection against loss of data when your computer gets stolen, or protection against data loss when the computer is running?

What difference does it make? I want to be sure that if the laptop is stolen, nobody can access the data.

In this case, I would go with hardware encryption. The biggest advantage of hw hdd encryption is that you do not have to worry about any software running in the background. Hw hdd encryption protects against accessing the data from the power-off state, and it is probably the strongest form of protection now, but once the computer is running, it provides no protection at all (for example against network attacks).

So, when I have a self encrypting hard drive, it provides no protection for LAN attacks?

i think truecrypt is better :)
